As part of our winter activity programme, Eagle Brae offers guests the chance to experience our thrilling guided sled dog rides. This is a unique Highland holiday experience you won’t find anywhere else. Imagine dashing along at exhilarating speeds on our 3-mile championship course. Zipping through the magnificent Scottish Highlands on a crisp winter’s day. This is dog sledding in Scotland at its best!
Whilst the actual run lasts around ten minutes, the whole activity is about an hour and a half long. An experience of a lifetime for winter thrill seekers!
Sled Ride Preparation
Meet And Greet
Before embarking on the dog sledding adventure of a lifetime, you will receive a full introduction to the activity and meet our dogs. Typically we use hounds for the sleigh rides rather than huskies, as hounds are faster. Usually there will be six or eight dogs pulling one guest at a time, together with the guide. We’ll also show you things like how the dogs are harnessed to the sled, how to control the dogs during your sledding expedition, and a few key dog sledding terms to help you control the dogs.
One common question we are asked is, if the dogs poop while they run. Well, here at Eagle Brae we have trained our dogs to do their business before they run. They actually won’t be harnessed up until they have done so. So, you don’t need to worry.
Time To Ride
Once you have got the hang of the basics, it is time to take to the course. No snow? No problem. Our very own purpose-built sled dog track winds around the beautiful wildflower meadow next to our log cabin village. This stunning all-grass trail has been carefully adapted for canine paws. In fact, most of our sled dog rides happen on grass. The dogs go faster on grass, and it is much more fun and safer. Which means our sledding pooches love bounding around the track just as much as you will!
At the end of the run the dogs are all unharnessed and watered. And if there’s more than one guest having a ride, we’ll get another eight dogs ready to go.
