Luxury Self-Catering Holidays in Scotland with Fishing
Salmon Fishing
The best salmon pools are on the last quarter miles of the rivers Farrar and Glass, up to and including the junction where they meet and become the river Beauly. Fishing for salmon is by fly only and the salmon run from July through to the end of the season on 15th October. Salmon average around 5 lb, but it’s possible to catch much bigger specimens. (In October 2018, Eagle Brae owner, Mike, caught a 19 lb salmon in the river Farrar. The biggest salmon caught in the river since 1947!)
Trout Fishing
Guests can spin or fly fish for trout in either the river Glass or the river Farrar. Both are great for trout. The Farrar has a higher quantity, but of a smaller size. Whereas the Glass has fewer, but they average much bigger.
Alternatively, guests may choose to fish a small wee hill loch called Loch an Airidh Fhroaich, a beautiful little sheltered loch in the native Caley pinewood of Strathfarrar. Here, the trout average around 1 lb, which is a very good average weight. We also offer fishing on Loch Beannacharan in Strathfarrar, from our own boat. In the right conditions, Beannacharan can produce a handsome bag of trout at a good size, in spectacular remote scenery.
Pike Fishing
Pike are best caught on lures, spinners, plugs and dead bait and are great fun to catch. Our guests can fish for them in the river Glass, where they grow very large. Every year, we manage to catch and release pike weighing 20 lb. And in 2018, we recorded one of 33 lb! We like to release all big pike as they are beneficial apex predators in a freshwater environment. One of the best spots for pike fishing is the bay right in front of the Eagle Brae entrance.
