Eagle Brae Log Cabins, built by the Timber Kings
For a holiday with a difference this year, head for the beautiful Scottish Highlands and stay in our luxury self-catering eco-resort. The only log cabin resort in the UK to be built by the Timber Kings (Pioneer Log Homes of BC), our log cabins in Scotland are located midway between Glen Affric and Glen Strathfarrar, with panoramic views over Strathglass. Each cabin’s interior features hand-carved wooden panels with Pictish motifs, Celtic knotwork and Scottish wildlife. A holiday here is the perfect combination of a rustic wilderness experience and luxurious, modern comforts.
Who are the Timber Kings?
HGV’s Timber Kings (which aired on Sky in the UK) follows the adventures of Pioneer Log Homes of BC. Established in 1973 by Bryan Reid, they’re now a multi-million-dollar company. In 2012, they began working with Mike Spencer-Nairn, owner of Eagle Brae.
Each episode of their show focuses on building a different log cabin, from the raw logs to the finished structure. There’s also a bit of behind-the-scenes drama thrown in for good measure! They custom-build every home in the town of Williams Lake, British Columbia. Then they take them apart, ship them worldwide to their destinations and reconstruct them on site.
The show is hosted by the men in charge, Andre Chevigny and Bryan Reid, Sr. Bryan Reid, Jr, Beat Schwaller, Peter Arnold and Joel Roorda, and each add their own experience and humour to the mix. Beat’s the creative one, Joel’s the problem-solver and Peter is the joker of the pack, so it makes for a very entertaining show!
What do they build?
The show has featured luxury log mansions such as the 4,400 square foot Godonooga House in Ontario. This gorgeous home has reclaimed pine floors and a stone shower. Also, the Wild-West style Abbelen Western-Theme Hotel, a log saloon from Season One, Episode 8.
And, of course, the same team built our log cabins too, right here at Eagle Brae.
How do they build them?
The Timber Kings’ log of choice is the Western Red Cedar, because of its natural beauty, unusual shape and incredible durability. The team carve, fit, tag and number each log by hand in Canada, which truly is a labour of love for everyone involved. The company pushes the limits of log and timber architecture, creating truly unique structures every time. Mike decided to work with them after their personalised wood carvings caught his eye …
“Each cabin has its own set of unique wood carvings integrated into its walls. From deer footprints climbing the stairs, to badgers, eagles and red squirrels. Specially carved Eagle Heads were designed to symbolise our business. We are all about nature and being connected with our natural surroundings.”
Eagle Brae’s eco-credentials
Eagle Brae is one of the few tourist destinations on the planet offering a largely carbon neutral break. Committed to sustainable eco-tourism, our hilltop hideaway log cabin resort strives to be self-sufficient when it comes to energy and utilities. Our cedar log cabins have wild-flower green roofs. A micro-hydro scheme provides plenty of hot water and electricity, while biomass burners provide underfloor heating. Water comes from a natural, sustainable underground supply, treated on-site and gravity fed to the cabins. We even have a roaming herd of deer who choose to live on-site!
