Visiting Inverness, capital of the Highlands

The wonderful city of Inverness is just a 40-minute drive from Eagle Brae. If you’re looking for day trips during your stay with us, we highly recommend a visit to the capital of the Highlands. This historic city in the Scottish Highlands is full of beauty, history and adventure.

Getting to Inverness

For guests of Eagle Brae, you can reach Inverness by car in about 40 minutes by heading east along the A831. Get directions. There are several places to park within the city centre, from large car parks to on-street parking. Find a place to park.

City centre attractions

Inverness city centre is compact, so it’s easy to get around on foot. There is so much to do, but here are just a few of our favourite city museums and attractions.

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery – Discover the art and history of the Scottish Highlands.
Inverness Castle – Currently closed, but opening in 2025 as an exciting new visitor experience.
Inverness Cathedral – Beautiful historic cathedral on the banks of the River Ness.
Inverness Botanic Gardens – A peaceful spot in the heart of Inverness with gardens and glasshouses.
Eden Court Theatre – Catch a show at Eden Court theatre and cinema.
Leakey’s Bookshop – The largest secondhand bookshop in Scotland, an amazing place with thousands of books.

Whisky lovers will have the chance to visit these fantastic shops and pick up some Scotch whisky treats.

Other local attractions

These tourist attractions are just outside the city centre, so will require a short drive.

Clava Cairns – Explore this prehistoric burial ground and ancient standing stones.
Fort George – An enormous 18th-century stronghold jutting into the Moray Firth.
Culloden Battlefield – See where the tragic Battle of Culloden took place in 1746.

River Ness – Walk along the banks of the River Ness and enjoy the sights and attractions.
Ness Islands – Tranquil islands in the middle of the River Ness, accessed via Victorian footbridges.
Caledonian Canal – Enjoy a stroll from Inverness along the Caledonian Canal towpath.
Craig Phadrig – On the outskirts of the city, enjoy stunning views from this Pictish hillfort.
