Adventure Calls

Wildlife watching: one of the best things to do in the Scottish Highlands

Strathglass, Scotland, is home to some of the most remarkable wildlife in the British Isles. What’s more, staying at Eagle Brae puts you right in the middle of it. Golden eagles and ospreys drift above the glen on most days, while red kites and peregrine falcons are regular sightings too. Furthermore, red deer graze the open hillsides year-round, while pine martens and red squirrels regularly move through the surrounding woodland.

And for guests who want to get closer, our guided Black Grouse safaris are one of the most unique things to do in the Scottish Highlands. You’ll venture out into the wider Strathglass area to witness one of Scotland’s rarest wildlife spectacles. And it’s the kind of experience most visitors to the Highlands never get close to. In addition, our camera stalking sessions take you onto the mountain. You’ll approach wild red deer to within around 100 metres, learn to read the landscape, and return with photographs that do the talking. And best of all, both activities are exclusive to guests staying in our Eagle Brae log cabins.

Fishing in Scotland: things to do on the water in the Scottish Highlands

The Rivers Farrar and Glass meet at Struy, just below the Eagle Brae estate. Together, they offer two of the finest freshwater experiences in the Scottish Highlands. Our guided canoeing trips take you downstream from Mauld Bridge on the River Glass. You’ll then paddle through a dramatic gorge with cliffs rising 100 feet on either side. And along the way, you’ll pass the historic Eilean Aigas estate. Osprey and peregrine falcon nests are also visible in the gorge itself. Trips run in two-person Canadian canoes, making them sociable, accessible, and suitable for everyone from age four upwards. In addition, no paddling experience is needed thanks to expert guides. It’s also available year-round and is consistently one of the best things to do in the Scottish Highlands for Eagle Brae guests.

And for those who’d rather cast a line, fishing in Scotland doesn’t get much better than here. The rivers around Eagle Brae hold brown trout and salmon, and salmon fishing in Scotland is at its finest here. Our team can also arrange guided sessions on some of the best Highland rivers in Inverness-shire. And whether you’re a seasoned angler or a complete newcomer, there’s something deeply satisfying about a Highland day spent beside these rivers.

Glen Affric walks and highland walking routes

Some of the best highland walking routes in Scotland begin right here on the Eagle Brae estate. Walking routes range from gentle riverside paths along the River Farrar to demanding hill walks into the surrounding mountains. Glen Affric, protected as a National Nature Reserve, is also just a short drive away. It’s widely regarded as one of the most beautiful glens in all of Scotland, and Glen Affric walks range from easy loch-side paths to ridge routes with panoramic views. Moreover, the Loch Ness 360 trail and the walks around Beauly are both within easy reach for guests wanting to explore further.

And for guests who prefer to cover more ground, mountain biking in the Scottish Highlands is a fantastic option. We can also help plan the perfect route. And whether you want family-friendly forest tracks or more challenging off-road terrain, bike hire can be arranged through the estate. Our team is also always happy to recommend the best routes for the season.

Field sports and unique things to do in the Scottish Highlands

Eagle Brae is a traditional Highland estate. And as a result, field sports form a natural part of what we offer guests. Clay pigeon shooting is a consistently popular choice, with sessions taking place on the estate with all equipment provided. No prior experience is needed, and our team makes the whole experience safe, welcoming, and enjoyable. For those with an interest in marksmanship, target shooting introductory sessions are also available. Again, these are led by Eagle Brae team members with substantial knowledge and experience.

And for something more peaceful, pony trekking through the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve is one of those Highland experiences that stays with you. We can arrange guided treks through some of the most scenic terrain in Inverness-shire. They’re suitable for all experience levels, including complete beginners. It’s the kind of activity that reminds you why you came to the Highlands in the first place.
